    Description:

    An image is worth thousands of words. Indeed, an image contains a rich set of information about a production line, or a scene in various domains. Hence, it is a challenge to extract useful information from images so as to enable machines to possess human-like vision which are indispensable for intelligent automation and smart manufacturing. Therefore, the aim of this course is to educate students with the basic knowledge and skills underlying image processing and machine vision in general. The scope of this course covers image acquisition, image representation, image transformation, feature extraction, feature grouping, 2D geometry from images, and 3D geometry from images.

    Machine learning refers to cognition of new knowledge about new or familiar things, while recognition refers to re-cognize identities of familiar things. Hence, the aim of this course is to educate students with basic knowledge and skills for the design of pattern recognition systems in industries and societies. The scope of this course covers pattern detection, pattern modellings, pattern cognition and learning, pattern understanding, pattern identification, and pattern classification.

    The aim of this course is to educate the students with the basic knowledge and skills for the design of control systems in engineering projects and industries. The scope of this course covers the topics related to modelling of systems under control, methods of designing stable control systems, methods of designing control systems which have fast and accurate responses, methods of designing control systems with customer-specified poles, and methods of calculating margins of stability of control systems after the design.

    Microcontrollers are the basic building blocks inside all the automation systems as well as data communication networks in industry and society. Without microcontrollers, there will be no intelligent manufacturing, no internet of things, and no smart cities. A microcontroller is a microprocessor system, which includes central processing unit, input interface modules, and output interface modules. The aim of this course is to educate students with the basic knowledge and programming skills of ARM Cortex M4 microcontroller, which will enable them to become future users of microcontrollers. This course will cover the topics such as: programming the central processing unit of microcontroller, programming input interface modules of microcontrollers, and programming output interface modules of microcontrollers.

The scope of this course covers sensors in mechanical systems, electrical systems, fluid systems, environmental systems, and perception systems.

    Description:

    Human beings are living inside the ocean of signals. These signals enable human beings to demonstrate intelligence. Similarly, machines are also surrounded by signals. Therefore, machine intelligence becomes a hot topic since many decades due to the high expectation from public on the emergence of smart machines and smart products. However, the research community is still struggling about the focus of machine intelligence. For instance, the low-level focus of machine intelligence is to advocate computer-aided human intelligence. The more challenging focus will aim at achieving human-like self-intelligence by machines themselves. The development of machine’s self-intelligence faces two fundamental issue. The first one is to discover, or formulate, the physical principles behind the transformation from visual signals to cognitive states of knowing the meanings of these visual signals. The second one is to discover, or formulate, the physical principles behind the transformation from audio signals to cognitive states of knowing the meanings of these audio signals. This course was first offered in year 2012. Since year 2019, the course objectives are to prepare students to master the fundamentals of achieving computer-aided human intelligence, as well as to prepare students to venture into the achievements of machine’s self-intelligence.

    Robots are the most advanced creatures of human beings on earth. The best benefit of using robots is to free human beings from doing dangerous, difficult, dirty, and repetitive jobs in agriculture, industry, national defense, and many other service sectors. Hence, the aim of this course is to educate students with the fundamental knowledge and basic skills in robotics, which will enable them to become future designers of robots as well as future researchers in robotics. This robotics course will cover the following key topics: Mechatronic Design of Robots, Robot Motion Planning, Robot Motion Control, Robot Kinematics, Robot Dynamics.
